After being haunted by night terrors for refusing to attend the funeral of her recently estranged Caribbean mother, Angelika, a German vintner’s wife, late 40s, finds her family’s vineyard estate dying from the onset of a sudden terrible drought.
To lift the “curse” Angelika is forced to confront her water phobia and dive into the untamed Rio Cobre river in Jamaica to reconcile with her ‘alleged” dishonoured Caribbean ancestor, the River Mistress, much to the horror of her German family, who fear for her sanity. Angelica, however, embarks on a journey of self-discovery and begins to question her life as a ‘mixed’ race woman’ within a white community.
Set in German Wine Country, urban London and tropical Jamaica, River Mistress explores the themes of identity, family heritage and the need for belonging.
