Being a single parent is a hard, full-time job as it is, but having to deal with your little one’s superhuman abilities brings it to a whole new level. Nicole films her son around the clock in order to track his progress, helps him learn how to control his newly squired powers, takes care that he doesn’t cause havoc in public, and protects him from a band of mysterious men who are after him.
“Have you ever wondered what it’s like to raise a superhero?” she wonders in the comic book’s trailer “How do you give him a normal childhood? How do you protect him from the world?” The last two questions are sadly all too relevant to parents of POC youngsters everywhere – they might not wield superhuman powers but are still vulnerable to unprovoked violence and discrimination from a world that often fails to understand and appreciate them.
Indeed, Raising Dion gave us a lot to think about and offered a new, refreshing and thought-provoking perspective on the superhero genre, so we were extremely excited to find out that it’ll be brought to life as a 10 episode Netflix mini series!
With the support of Michael B. Jordan and his production company, Outlier Society, Dion’s story will be making a television appearance in the near future. Carol Barbee, known from series such as Hawaii Five-O and UnREAL, has already written the pilot episode and will helm the project together with original creator Liu who will direct. Jordan is the Executive Producer and will also appear in the series as Dion’s father.
Liu promises that Raising Dion will make us laugh and cry, and considering the talented team behind it, we have no doubt about it!
